Mapping Imagined Geographies of Revolutionary Russia

PBC0069: social alienation

PBC 69 conveys Bolsheviks’ frustration at the inactivity of peasants and villages in promoting the revolutionary cause. Rural Russia is muddy and immobile (W519), dilapidated and frozen in the pre-modern world (W72). Urban revolutionaries, some coming from the villages, lament the lack of freedom they feel returning to their home region (W106). Collectively Russian villages make a “talentless and slavish fatherland” that the Bolsheviks wanted to mobilize (W436).
