PBC0082: despair at defeat
PBC 82 conveys a feeling of despair as Russians, mainly educated nationalists, move south across Crimea (W67, 499) or east across Siberia into exile. Images of corpses, crippled soldiers (W499), murderous partisans, and marauders (W199) dominate this PBC. In Siberia’s taiga “anguish writhes like a snake” (W207). Lake Baikal becomes the point of no return in taking leave from the old life (W206).
