Mapping Imagined Geographies of Revolutionary Russia

PBC0072: dread of oppression

PBC 72 conveys a pro-revolutionary geography of dread at political oppression. Particularly prominent are names of distant parts of Russia where there were either major prisons or monasteries, or both, such as Solovki (White Sea) or Akatui (eastern Siberia) (W177, 190). This PBC can refer both to tsarist Russia and to Bolshevik Russia (W189).
