PBC 296 expresses grief and depression at the loss of the tsarist state (the “throne has been toppled” and the lack of any apparent political or social order (“the avalanche of the people,” W486). One instance shares dismay at people and especially young orphans, the “little birds,” wandering aimlessly around Red Square in Moscow (W473). Another asks in despair, “When will the dawn of better days rise over my Fatherland?” (W561).
