PBC0159: hope for Russia's resurrection

PBC 159 performs nationalist supplication for the salvation of Russia during the Civil War. Pleas for help from God and humanity ring out among the clamor of widespread destruction. In one example, the poet pleads, “God, give me strength! Save Russia, show it a miracle,” calling for personal and national fortitude during what seemed like the ultimate test of character (W88). Another pleads more directly, asking “O, Russia, awake and arise! Your bright day will come” (W516). At their lowest point, Russians look upward for saving grace from the Christian God in the hope for better times.
