Mapping Imagined Geographies of Revolutionary Russia

PBC0125: ecstasy at new world

PBC 125 expresses pro-revolutionary ecstasy in imagining the boundless world Russians and all working people will inherit after the revolution. Like the uniquely fertile ground that results from an intense forest fire, the new, post-revolutionary world is depicted as a staging ground for development on the ruins of the past: “In antiquity’s place virgin soil blossoms” (W527). The effect is seen across the land, where “From village to Peter’s City fires have started to burn wonderfully!” (W393). These fires are compared elsewhere to the “the blood of the slave!” (W262). Workers are like “tailors,” “the creators of golden worlds” (W385), intending “joyfully to sew East to West” (W385) to unite the world in revolution.
