Mapping Imagined Geographies of Revolutionary Russia

PBC0144: hope for rebirth

PBC 144 expresses hope in the face of Russia’s tattered state during the years of war and revolution. and a confidence that brighter days are to come. In one instance “orphans, sisters, and widows all across Rus’ are crying, their mothers… wait with longing and a new hope” for the return of the imperial soldiers from the European front. Another instance celebrates White Army hopes in the Civil War with joyous shouts that: “Rus’ is free! Rus is resurrected!” (W94). Those behind the lines and soldiers alike experience moments of optimism for the future of Russia.
