PBC 34 expresses a rare feeling among Bolshevik writers of hopelessness at the darkness and sameness of the Russian rural landscape (W72). Although sometimes mitigated by hope for a new rural awakening, this mood in the middle of the fight is less upbeat than the usual Bolshevik tone (W109).
