PBC0172: pride in heroism

PBC 172 expresses tsarist nationalist pride in Russian bravery even in defeat. In one example, an army nurse claims that all soldiers wounded on the World War I battlefield in the far western empire deserve a St. George’s cross: “All of you suffered for Rus’,/ This ribbon-dream is for everyone./ Everyone deserves a medal/ Everyone deserves a cross” (243).
