PBC0135: arrogant confidence

PBC 135 displays tsarist-nationalists’ arrogant confidence that tsarist forces will crush invaders. Led by God and the Tsar, Russia –often called by its ancient name, “Rus’” – is a country of heroic defenders: “… And across all Rus’, the great [Rus’],/ Swept the loud word: ‘Prepare, brave soldiers…’” for war against attackers (W156). Another command, still addressing the country’s soldiers, emphasizes their proud origins: “Go, dear warriors,/ Astound the world with your heroism,/ And Russia will prepare for its enemies a magnificent feast!” (W33).
